Fail

The Problem

Acumen Consulting team worked with a governmental entity that supports Egyptian exporters to increase their exports by providing market intelligence, logistics support, marketing, etc. The objective of the engagement is to evaluate the performance of market intelligence department of the entity, provide capacity building training for the staff, and submit recommendations on how to improve the current products or services offered by the market intelligence department.

Approach

The Approach

The initial stage of the project was a benchmarking activity where Acumen analyzed the current global benchmark of export development authorities’ portals and compared it with the agency's current portal. A number of recommendations were presented to elevate the current offering to the competitive level.

A set of training modules were developed to enhance staff’s analytical, visualization and report development skills. Training modules were presented for employees from all governorates of Egypt at a rate of one session a week for four consecutive weeks. Lectures covered theoretical material as well as in class and take-home exercises.

Acumen developed the content for the first Exporters Dialogue Session, which is scheduled to become a platform for exporters and government agency to reach a consensus on what needs exporters currently have regarding improving their exports as well as the mechanism in which the agency can offer the services that will meet those demands.

The Results

The staff found the training modules to be very beneficial as shown by their implementation of the developed skills. A sample report of the ready-made garments industry was submitted by Acumen to act as a template for future reports and studies to follow. Acumen developed a market selection algorithm that allows the agency to find the target country with the highest potential for importing Egyptian products belonging to a specific sector.
